Myrtle “Mickie” Marengo was born Myrtle Lee Scribner, April 26th, 1933, in Tallahatchie County, MS and her soul took flight to Jesus on Sept. 28, 2021 from Jones County, MS.
Mickie was preceded to Heaven by her husband, Alvin C. Marengo Sr.; her daughter, Dawn Michelle Marengo; her sister, Sadie aka Sandi; her mother, Rosie May; and her father, Roy.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Gill of Gonzales, LA; her three sons, Alvin “Charlie” Marengo, Jr. (Sherri), of Petal, MS, Martin Anthony Marengo of Gulfport, and John Christopher Marengo of Laurel, MS; her oldest daughter, Faye Powell of Fairhope, AL; and an adopted daughter (who loved her dearly), Bridgette Davis of Biloxi, MS. Mama Mickie has 3 grandsons, 3 granddaughters, and 5 great grandchildren.
Mickie left the farm on Route 2 in Tallahatchie County for the bright lights of the Gulf Coast at the tender age of 17. She was a part time waitress at the beautiful tourist destination on the beach, the Buena Vista, where she met a dashing Italian named Al Marengo. They married in 1955 and had three sons and then a little girl. Mickie loved her grandkids and holidays and any reason to dress up. She owned more wigs than Dolly Parton and spent a lot of money on shoes. Mickie reportedly knew the cures for every ailment known to man and wasn’t afraid to give you free medical advice, much of which she did not heed for herself. Her wish was to be cremated and her ashes scattered in a field of wildflowers- this is South Mississippi, the field is filled with goldenrod. The ‘scattering’ date will not be posted but there will be a marker next to her husband and daughter in Evergreen Gardens Cemetery, Gulfport, if you wish to lay a flower other than goldenrod. Please feel free to share a memory of Mickie Marengo and if her medical advice helped you.
A memorial service will be held in her honor at 11am, Saturday Oct. 9, 2021, at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS. Immediate family will gather at 9am and visitation with friends will be from 10am to the 11am service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in memory of Mickie & Michelle Marengo.
