Myrtle Jane Newman

Myrtle Jane Newman, age 100, of Long Beach passed away peacefully on August 21, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Myrt was a very active and vibrant person. She was born on September 6, 1923 in Ponchatoula, LA to the late Harvey & Addie Vinyard. She grew up there with her siblings, Edith, Walter, Edgar, Oscar, Clinton, and Belle.

Myrt graduated from Ponchatoula High School and continued her education at Business School of New Orleans. Myrt met and married her husband Virgil Payton Newman at the height of World War II where he served three years in the United States Marine Corps. Upon his return from the war the two of them settled in Long Beach, MS. Together they had one daughter, Jane Anne and lived their best lives here on the coast. Virgil passed away in 1971 leaving Myrt a widow. She continued working for Sears & Roebuck in the credit department until her retirement. Myrt lived out the remainder of her life in her Long Beach home. 

Myrt attended Long Beach Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed helping with the Special Education Sunday School Class for many years. She was a loving and devoted person, who had a strong will and can do attitude. Myrt will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Myrt is survived by her loving daughter, Jane Anne (Clarence) McBride of Gulfport, MS; granddaughters, Anna Michelle (Matt) Bergstedt of New Orleans, LA; and Stephanie Lynn (Tim) Jacobs of Birmingham, AL. Myrt also leaves behind to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, Gulfport (11280 Three Rivers, Gulfport, MS). Graveside services will follow at Gulf Pines Cemetery in Long Beach.
