Muriel Ruth Oehler Vogle

Muriel Ruth Oehler Vogle, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

Muriel was born in Biloxi, MS on August 12, 1934. She graduated from Biloxi High School, where she participated in the band. She then attended Perkinston Junior College, where she met the love of her life, Calvin E. Vogle. They were married on July 23, 1954, and, together, they built a home and raised six children in Saucier, MS. Muriel went on to receive her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi and taught for over 20 years, mostly at Saucier Elementary School. A beloved teacher, she was recognized by Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, sponsored student clubs and 4-H, and was a Girl Scout Brownie leader. She was an avid gardener who looked for beauty in the world around her.

Muriel was an active long-time member of Poplar Head Methodist Church, where she played the organ, taught Sunday School for children and adults, led Bible School, and organized memorable church plays. She was also a long-standing member of The Order of the Eastern Star, where she proudly served as a Worthy Matron and secretary of Chapter #376 in Perkinston, MS.

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband Calvin E. Vogle, her parents James A. Oehler and Ruth Peirce Oehler Martin, half-brothers James L. Oehler and Jerry J. Oehler, and son-in-law Michael D. Cannady. She is survived by her children Stephen (Peggy) Vogle, Catherine Cannady, William (Stephanie) Vogle, Julianna (Orlando) Gallego, Cynthia Ladnier, Patricia (Kevin) Hubbard, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and half-sisters Joy O. Cronin and Judy O. Fountain.

Muriel was loved by all and will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched. 

The family would like to thank Lighthouse Assisted Living & Memory Care in Ocean Springs, MS and St. Joseph Hospice for their love and support. 

A celebration of Muriel’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1 at Poplar Head Methodist Church in Saucier, MS. A family graveside service will follow at Blackwell Cemetery, also in Saucier, MS.
