MSGT Ret. James Brantley Nix, Sr. (Nick) 73, of Long Beach passed away Thursday, May 7, in Cookeville , TN. Nick had fought a difficult battle with heart disease and diabetes for many years.
Nick was born in Greenville , S.C. on December 9, 1935. Upon receiving his high school diploma, Nick entered the United States Air Force and subsequently served 22 years until his retirement. His military career took him and his family to many duty stations in the United States and an assignment for Nick in Saudi Arabia and the entire family lived in Okinawa for 3 years. After his military retirement, they relocated to Long Beach . He worked for another 20 years with U.S.Civil Service at the VA in Gulfport . Nick graduated from Jefferson Davis Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in business.
Nick spent many years working in his workshop where he built beautiful pieces of furniture. He was very talented and meticulous with his woodwork. The entire family was the recipient of pieces of his work. In the past year since his wifeaÌ‚â‚â„¢s death, he began quilting as another hobby. He was very proud of his work. His ultimate goal was to make quilts for his future great grandchildren.
He was preceeded in death by an infant daughter, Sabrina Leigh Nix, his beloved wife of 48 years, Mary Virginia Nix, and his parents Perry and Lillie Nix, of Greenville , S.C..
He is survived by two daughters, Nikki (Tom) Bradford of Long Beach , Cassandra (David) Lane of Cookeville, TN, his son, LTC James Brantley (Melody) Nix, Jr. of Clarksville, TN; grandchildren , Erica (Jason) Pounds, Brandon, Zachary and Nathan Nix, Jennifer (Jon) Helton and Breanna Bradford; his sister, Carolyn (Roy) Chism of Greenville, S.C., two brothers Ray (Judy) Nix of Gaffney, S.C., Thomas (Mabel) Nix of Dahlonega, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nick was a loving husband who took such very good care of his wife prior to her death.
He loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed family activities and vacations spent with them. He was a wonderful brother and all his nieces and nephews were so special to him. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Nick was a member of First Baptist Church , Long Beach .
Visitation will be on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. aÌ‚â‚"" 8.00 p.m. at The RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Rd. , Long Beach . The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Biloxi National Cemetary.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions be made to His Church Rising building fund for Long Beach First Baptist Church, 300 North Cleveland Ave., Long Beach, MS 39560.
