MSG James M. Sterling (US Army Retired), age 84, passed away on November 24, 2022 in Gulfport, MS.
He was formerly of Horton, Alabama and lived in Gulf Shores and Huntsville, AL. For the past two years he lived at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport.
James was born and raised in Horton, Alabama to Joe and Lois Sterling. Hoping to travel away from rural Alabama he enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Vietnam War and was recognized with many medals including the Bronze Star W/V First Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He retired after 20 faithful years of service. Afterwards he began a secondary career with Alabama Power in Appliance Sales, retiring after nearly 20 years.
He will be remembered for providing as a dedicated family man, and the love that he shared with others.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Emily Regina Sterling; daughter, Betty Sterling Chesnut; and his parents.
He is survived by his daughter, Billie Jo Sterling (Steven Freeman) of Horton, AL; son in law Durbin Chesnut; three grandchildren, April (Doug), Cody (Tina) and Nathan Chesnut of Pennsylvania; five great-grandchildren, Zachery Davy, Sarah Davy, Alyvia Chesnut, Allison Chesnut and Oren Chesnut; and brother, Danny Sterling (Barbara) of Oneonta, AL.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on December 16, 2022 at 9:00 am at Biloxi National Cemetery, 400 Veterans Ave. Biloxi, MS.
