Morene Jeter Cooper, 1914-2006, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 6, 2006 in Pensacola, Florida.
Mrs. Cooper was a Camille and Katrina survivor, riding out both storms in her Gulfport 2nd. Street apartment home. During Katrina she and her medical oxygen tank floated on her mattress with her son standing alongside in five and one half feet of storm water with debris swirling around until the flood receded. Mrs. Cooper evacuated to Milton, Florida on September 1, 2005.
Mrs. Cooper was born in Longview, Texas and had been a resident of MS for 89 years, of Gulfport 58 years. She was a member of Gulfport First Baptist Church since 1948 and was very active in all church activities, holding various officer positions in many of its
women's organizations. She taught various Sunday school departments well into her eighties. She served in many other community endeavors as well; den mother of the """"Pack""""; Gulfport Women's Club; Gulfport Garden Club; and United Daughters of the Confederacy among others. Mrs. Cooper had been a member of the Gulfport Yacht Club and Sunkist Country Club.
Mrs. Cooper was a graduate of Winona, MS, High School and Phillips Business College. She had been self-employed and worked alongside her husband of 63 years in the watchmaking and jewelry trade, operating Cooper's Jewelry and Gifts in Gulfport during the 1950's and '60's and before that in Winona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Gibbs Jeter and Ida Bell Varnell Jeter; a brother, Marvin Homer Jeter; a sister, Cornelia Lucille Sutton; her husband, James Bobby Cooper, Sr.; a son, James B. Cooper, Jr.; and a grandson, Christopher Wyatt Cooper.
Her survivors include a son, Dr. Thomas H. Cooper and wife Kathleen of Milton, Florida; daughter-in-law, Mrs. June Cooper of Allen, Texas; five grandchildren, Patrick Thomas Cooper of Nashville, TN; Lauren Morene Cooper of Milton, FL; Vivian Kaysen of Jefferson City, MO; James Mark Cooper of Houston, TX; Cheryl Franklin of Allen, TX; two great-grandsons Stephen Kaysen of Jefferson City and Nicholas Cooper of Houston; many nephews and nieces, including Dr. Marvin H. Jeter, Jr. of Jackson, MS.
The family wishes there were room to mention and thank all those who contributed to all that helped in things both small and large over the years, particularly the last few years. It must suffice to mention a few: Wright, Ward, Hatten, and Guel, CPA's; Triplett-Day Drug Co.; Dr.'s David Larosa, Paul Mullen, Fredrick Pakron, Frank and Clay Hilton of Gulfport; Dr. Chuck Register of First Baptist; Feed My Sheep of Gulfport; Dr. Amos Prevatt of Pensacola; Covenant Hospice of Northwest Florida; Baptist Manor of Pensacola; and the special staff of all those mentioned above. And last but not least, Donny Sowell Funeral Home of Milton, FL and Gulf Coast Funeral Home for finally helping to bring Mrs. Cooper home to her beloved MS Gulf Coast and to her friends.
Visitation will be at 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Gulf Coast Funeral Home, Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport. Following visitation there will be a graveside service and burial at Floral Hills Memorial Garden at 11:00 a.m.
