Moody Grishman

October 20, 1913 — January 7, 2008

Moody Grishman, age 94, of Biloxi, died on January 7, 2008 in Biloxi at the Biloxi Community Living Center.
Mr. Grishman was born in Houston, Texas, October 20, 1913, the son of Ben and Annie Grishman. Moody married Elizabeth Cowan on March 20, 1942 and moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1944 where he and Elizabeth raised their family.
He owned and operated Moody's Tradewinds Restaurant in Mississippi City until it was destroyed by the 1947 hurricane, after which he entered the real estate and insurance business in Biloxi. Following Hurricane Camille in 1969, Mr. Grishman left the insurance business but continued his real estate brokerage business, Moody Grishman Agency, Inc., for approximately 55 years.
Mr. Grishman had a distinguished career in the real estate brokerage business. He served as the President of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Board of Realtors in 1956 and 1961, State President of the Mississippi Association of Realtors from 1967 to 1968, and was named Realtor Emeritus of the National Association of Realtors for 50 years of service. Mr. Grishman also served eleven years on the Biloxi Planning Commission from 1966-1977.
Mr. Grishman was a founding member of Congregation Beth Israel in Biloxi, where he served on its first building committee and later as President of the Congregation.
Mr. Grishman was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth and his brother, Irving Grishman and wife, Miriam.
He is survived by his four children, Melanie Grishman and her husband, Dr. Herman Flax, of North Bethesda, MD, David Grishman and his wife, Kay, of Madison, MS, Naomi Grishman of Atlanta, GA, and Milton Grishman and his wife, Roberta Avila, of Biloxi, MS; four grandchildren, Jeffrey, Mark, and Nancy Grishman, and Monique Cherie Franklin; two great-grandchildren, Colin Wray and Elizabeth Anne Franklin; a nephew Barry Grishman; and a brother-in-law, Walter G. Cowan, Sr. of New Orleans, LA.
The family prefers memorial donations be made to Congregation Beth Israel Historic Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 4868, Biloxi, MS 39535.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Southern Memorial Park, Biloxi. The family will be sitting Shiva at 6:00 p.m.. at his residence located at 274 Dewey Circle, Biloxi, MS, on Wednesday evening only.
