Monroe M. Kirby, passed away on Friday, December 29, 2006 in Jackson at the age of 97.
Mr. Kirby was born on July 20, 1909 in Houlka, MS. He served in World War II with the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corp enlisting in 1929, until his honorable transfer from the active Navy Medical Department to the Fleet Naval Reserve from 1949 to 1959 achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer W-2.
He served on the USS Guam CB-2 and the USS Augusta. He helped put into commission the USS Guam Medical Department. He received numerous medals which included the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct with 3 stars, American Defense with 1 star, American and European African Theatre, Asiatic Pacific Area, Philippine Campaign, and Navy Occupation Medal.
After his Naval Retirement he moved to the Orange Grove area of Gulfport. On June 30, 1972, Mr. Kirby was recognized for over 19 years of faithful service to his country at the Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) in Gulfport. He later moved to the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport. Mr. Kirby was honored on June 17, 1998 as the oldest resident of the GAFRH in celebration of the 100th birthday of the U.S. Navy Hospital Corp. Due to Hurricane Katrina, the GAFRH transferred the residents to the Washington Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. He later moved to his daughter's home in Perkinston, before moving to the State Veterans Home in Kosciusko. Mr. Kirby was a member and deacon at New Hope Baptist Church on Landon Road in Gulfport and was a memebr of the Orange Grove Lodge 635.
Mr. Kirby is preceded in death by his wife, Eva Mae (Gordon) Kirby; his parents, H.B. Kirby and Christianna West Kirby; his three brothers, E. Allen Kirby, Clarence Kirby, and R.T. Kirby; his three sisters, Inez Gordon, Dot Andrews, and Corinne Barham.
He is survived by his children, Christine and Lowell Lee of Perkinston, Rovenia and John McDonald of Haughton, LA, Cecelia and Clint Segraves of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Malcolm and Donna Kirby of Burris, LA; his sister, Johnnie Christine Brasher of Hernando, his grandchildren, Regenia Godfrey of Lake Charles, LA, Karl Lee of Summerdale, AL, Shawn McDonald of San Diego, CA, Ayleen Cook of Bossier City, LA, Gordon McDonald of Haughton, LA, Christopher Segraves of Fountain Hills, AZ, Kort Kirby of Metairie, LA, and Lisa Buchner and Crystal Keel both of Knoxville, TN; sixteen great grandchildren and numerous other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Riemann family's GULF COAST FUNERAL HOME, Three Rivers Road Chapel in Gulfport.
