Michael Shenton Rafferty of Pass Christian died on Friday morning, September 3, 2010 of complications from diabetes at age 73.
He was the youngest child of Dr. and Mrs. Donald George Rafferty. Mike was sweet and loving soul. He loved Pass Christian and was a wonderful uncle and loyal friend. Mike was an avid yachtsman, golfer and world traveler. He was the Commodore of the Pass Christian Yacht Club and King of the Bards of the Binnacle. He was a life member of the Pass Christian Yacht Club, a member of the Pass Christian Isles Gulf Club and a former member of the Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans.
He was preceded in death by his father Dr. Donald George Rafferty, his mother Mervyne Shenton Rafferty, brothers Nigel Ewing Rafferty and Rory Robin Rafferty, Sr., his sister Sheelah Rafferty Maginnis and sister in law Lucille Atkinson Rafferty.
Mike is survived by his sister-in-law, Bruce Witherspoon Rafferty of New Orleans and his nine nieces and nephews and their spouses, Leslie Loker Cooper (David) of Fort Worth, Texas, Sharon Loker McQuilkin (Trailer) of Ocean Springs, Shaun B. Rafferty (Katie) of New Orleans, Rory Robin Rafferty, Jr. (Carol) of Pass Christian, Donald J. Rafferty (Susan) of Pass Christian, Kevin P. Rafferty (Ann) of Houston, Texas, Brian E. Rafferty (Robin) of Nashville, Tennessee, R. James Rafferty (Beverly) of Alexandria, Virginia, and Kenneth C. Rafferty (Tina) of Baton Rouge, LA. He also survived by 22 grand nieces and nephews and six great grand nieces and nephews.
Mike served in the U.S. Army, stationed primarily in Japan. He was a graduate of Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA, where he excelled in academics and sports. He loved returning to Riverside for reunions with his classmates and former teachers. He also attended LSUNO and worked for several years at the Michoud Assembly Facility and the Stennis Space Center.
There will be a Memorial Service at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pass Christian on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 3 p.m., with burial immediately following in Live Oak Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit Trinity from 2-3 p.m. The family invites all of Mike friends to join them at the Pass Christian Yacht Club immediately following the services for an Irish Wake and a ""Celebration of Life.""
