Beloved husband, father and brother Michael Woodrow Morgan, 52, died Saturday at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport after a two-year battle with brain cancer.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving with the Seabees before retiring after 20 years as a steelworker first class. He was employed with Public Works at Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport at the time of his death.
Michael was an avid musician, learning to play in grade school and playing in junior high, high school and college. He played drums with the Seattle Imperials from the age of 15 until he aged out at 21. He also played in a jazz band while attending college.
A devout Catholic, Michael was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4898, where he served as grand knight. Under his leadership, the Knights began the monthly breakfast. He was the color guard commander for almost 10 years.
A member of the Carnival Association of Long Beach, Michael served in several capacities, including ball captain, treasurer, float chairman and put together the music for the carnival tableau for many years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Michael J. Morgan, Kathleen and Don Hurst and father-in-law John W. Magandy.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Peggy Magandy Morgan, children Zachary Michael (Heather), Ashley Kathleen, grandchildren Izaiah, and his parents, Brittany and Brandon Stevison; Cory and Peyton; adoptive daughter Amy Jay and grandson James, sister Elizabeth, nieces Cheyanne and Kathryn, numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their profound thanks to Dr. Allison Wall, Dr. Eric Wolfson and Dr. David Graham and their staffs for their care of Michael during his illness. A special thanks as well to Dr. Stephen Johns and the staff at PMR at MHG for their care of Michael in rehab.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at St. Thomas, with visitation held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A military honors burial will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
