Michael Martinka

January 24, 1937 — February 2, 2007

Michael J. Martinka, 70, was called Home in the early morning hours of February 2, 2007.
Michael was born January 24, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia C. (Ginger) Martinka, daughters Jenna, husband Todd Hall and Stephanie, husband Bob Sanders. He is survived also by sisters Sister Ann Michael, Janice, husband Jim Perl, Emily, husband Ronald Rerko, Bernadine, husband Ronald Skrovan, Therese Martinka, and Rosemary Martinka, wife of his deceased brother, Gerald. He was blessed with a multitude of loving nieces and nephews.
As a young man, Michael was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force. He then worked as a sales representative for technical instrumentation prior to owning his own business, a sandblasting and specialized coating company for water towers and food industry tanks. Michael was frequently called upon to climb these great towers and tanks, and once climbed for three hours to a height of 750 feet to change a light bulb.
Undaunted when Katrina left their Gulfport home scoured to the cement slab, Mike and Ginger acquired a nearby property and rebuilt. Michael had hands-on involvement in every step of the refurbishing process of their new home, and it stands today, nearly completed, in mute testamony of his consummate building skills.
Michael's love affair with the South began in the early 1970s when he moved to Georgia, but his passion for the South was cemented when he and Ginger discovered Mississippi.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, February 5, at 1:00 PM. at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 5557 Daugherty Road in Long Beach, where friends may visit 30 minutes before Mass.
Michael's family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the St. Thomas Reconstruction Fund, or to the donor's favorite charity, in his memory. Please mail donations to the St. Thomas Reconstruction Fund to P O Box 1529, Long Beach, MS 39560.
