Michael John Cissell

LCDR Michael John Cissell, US Naval Aviator, retired who proudly served his country for over 20 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Saad Hospice Retreat in Mobile, Alabama.

He was born on October 25, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, and moved with his family to Gulfport, MS at the age of 5.  He lived in Gulfport with his family until leaving in 1970 for college.

Michael had a remarkable career in the US Navy, dedicating his life to serving his nation. Upon retiring from the Navy, he settled with his beloved wife Dana Ann Fall Cissell and together they owned and operated "General Business Services" in Durham, North Carolina. They provided impeccable business accounting services to local small businesses in the community.

Education played a significant role in Michael's life. He was a proud graduate of Gulfport East High School's Class of 1970. He went on to pursue higher education and obtained a bachelor's degree in arts from the University of Southern Mississippi. Fueling his thirst for knowledge and world affairs, Michael achieved a Master's degree in International Affairs from Washington University and later earned a Master's degree in Business Administration from Salve Regina University.

Even outside his professional life, Michael was a man of many passions and interests. He had an innate talent for playing the piano and found great joy in creating beautiful melodies. Astronomy was another fascination for him; he would often gaze at the night sky contemplating distant galaxies and had a special interest in the planet Mars. Additionally, he indulged himself in military war games that fueled his passion for history.

One remarkable aspect of Michael's life was the love and compassion he had for animals, particularly dogs. Together with his wife Dana, they rescued many dogs over the years and considered them to be their precious "fur babies." Their home was filled with love and warmth that extended beyond human relationships.

Michael will forever be remembered for his dedication to both his family and friends. He cherished every moment spent with them and leaves behind a lifetime of beautiful memories.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 42 years Dana Ann Fall Cissell, his parents Curtis H. and Dorothy (nee Moehrle) Cissell.

Michael was a cherished brother to Marianne (Carl) Thomas of Daphne, AL and Mickie (Jack) Ainsworth of Lafayette, LA. He was an adoring uncle to Denise Ainsworth of Charlotte, NC, Jessica (Keith) Wenrich of Watkinsville, GA, Joy (Chris) Rayburn of Daphne, AL, Kirk (Lyndi) Ainsworth of New Orleans, LA and Joe C. (Ashley) Thomas of Orlando, FL, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.

Michael's military service was highly regarded by the Retired Naval Officers Association. His dedication and commitment to serving his country will always be recognized and appreciated.

Michael John Cissell's bright spirit will continue to live on through the cherished memories he left behind. He touched the lives of many with his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. He will forever be remembered as a loving husband, dedicated serviceman, loyal friend, and compassionate animal advocate.
