Merline Rita Mitchell, affectionately known as Rosie, passed away on April 11, 2025, at her home in Kiln, Mississippi. She was born on April 9, 1949, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and lived a life filled with love, family, and cherished memories.
Merline was a beloved figure in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, known to all as "Granny." Her welcoming spirit extended beyond her own family, embracing any child who entered her home.
A woman of diverse interests, Merline loved to dance, enjoyed country music, and found great pleasure in simple joys such as fresh flowers, vacations, and her daily cup of Coffee and Chicory. Her vibrant personality and zest for life touched everyone she met.
Merline was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Mitchell; her sons, Harvey Mitchell Jr. and Charlie Mitchell; her father, Mervin Ohlmeyer; her mother, Evelyn Ohlmeyer; her sister, Mary Colson; and her grandson, Coty Mitchell.
She is survived by her loving family, including her daughters, Belinda "Sissy" Mitchell (Jeff) of Kiln and Starlyn Peterson of Bay St. Louis; her siblings, David Ohlmeyer (Jane) from Houma; her cherished grandchildren, Kassie Dwyer, Kaylee Dwyer, Trey Dwyer, Justin Mitchell, Kyle Moran (Taylor), Brandon Mitchell (Morgan), Brody Mitchell, Cade Peterson, Ashley Peterson, Ashton "Bubba" Peterson, and many "adopted" grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her great-grandchildren, Colbi, Brittany, Brianna, Mariyon "Bookie," Kaysen, Harvey, Brandon Jr., Brooklynn, Emerie, Charlie, Evelynn, Eli, Isabella "Izzy," and Adeline Rose.
The family will gather to honor Merline's life on April 16, 2025, at St. Matthew Catholic Church of White Cypress in Perkinston, Mississippi. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM. She will then be laid to rest at Garden of Memory in Bay St. Louis from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
Merline Rita Mitchell leaves behind a legacy of love and joy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
