Mavis Joy Floyd was a lifelong resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She was raised in Gulfport and later reared her family in Long Beach, where she became an integral part of her community. Having graduated from Gulfport High School in 1962, Mavis was the Class Orator and later became the class historian. She was considered by many as the ""mother hen"" who cared after her chicks. She was, quite simply, the ""heart"" of the Gulfport Commodores Class of 1962. She made it her mission to quietly support her family, community and class members throughout her life.
Through the years, Mavis was a stay at home mom while raising her two daughters. After which, she returned to school, receiving her BSN in the first graduating class of the nursing program at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park. She went on to receive a Master's Degree in Nursing Administration. She enjoyed her years as an instructor of nursing at MGCCC, Jackson County Campus. She served as the President of The Gulfport Junior Woman's Club, was active for many years in the Carnival Association of Long Beach. After retiring, she served as a well-loved substitute teacher at Long Beach High School.
A very important part of her life was always St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach, where she served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and Commentator. Mavis was an avid and committed volunteer who selflessly donated her time and resources to St. Thomas Catholic School and her community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sonny and Maydean Floyd of Gulfport.
She is survived by her daughters Rachael Reed (Dennis) Reeves of Ocean Springs and Rebecca Reed (Stephen) Koenenn of Long Beach; five Grandchildren, Cole Donaldson, Bryson Reeves and Haley Reeves (Colton) Waltman all of Ocean Springs, Chase Elsworth and Reed Koenenn both of Long Beach; one great-grandchild, Paisley Waltman of Ocean Springs; and her companion, Walter Dayhoff of Long Beach. Although she was an only child, she was cherished by her extended family.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at noon at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am.
Mavis served her God, her family, her friends and her community with a generous heart and enjoyed a life well lived.
