Matthew Wade Bute passed away on September 10, 2021, in his home located in Gulfport, MS.

Matthew was preceded in death by his mother, Jennifer Holmes and younger brother, Nathan Thumm.

He is survived by his older brother, Brad Bute; his loving nieces, Brooklyn and Rainee Bute; and his many friends and comrades.

Matthew was a native of DeKalb, IL. He graduated from Long Beach High School in 2012 and was loved by many for his character. He was known for enjoying his free time with friends and family, shooting pool, singing karaoke, and attending various social events. He was a benefit to any group that he was part of.

During high school he was an exceptional student and an incredible athlete. Matthew played on the Long Beach High School football team as a defensive outside linebacker.

As a civilian, Matt was a strong dedicated worker. He was very successful and managed to make a good life for himself by working for Inland Dredging over the last couple of years.

As a soldier, Matthew was known as Staff Sgt. Bute. He was known for his resiliency and dedication to not only the mission, but also to the soldiers around him. His leadership was unparalleled, and, in any circumstance, he put his soldiers’ welfare before his own. He was devoted to his friends and comrades and stood for what was right. SSG Bute was an example of a leader the Army strives to develop; he could be counted on to take charge of any mission and ensure its success.

SSG Matthew W. Bute, was a Dismounted Infantry Squad Leader in 2nd Platoon, Company B (Reaper), 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment (Mississippi Rifles), 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, Mississippi Army National Guard. He was responsible for the training and wellbeing for a squad of infantry soldiers.

He began his military career in October 2012 and has served in the Mississippi Army National Guard for over nine years. He completed Infantry One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA. SSG Bute deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield and served in Kuwait and Iraq. In 2020, he voluntarily deployed to the National Capital Region in response to civil unrest. SSG Bute spent the entirety of his military career in Company B, 1st Battalion, 155 Infantry Regiment and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant on May 1, 2021.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 22, 2021, at Riemann Family Funeral Home, Long Beach, with a visitation from 10:00 AM until the service. Interment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
