Mary Lee “Gigi” York, 80 of Biloxi, MS passed away on March 16, 2024 at Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 27, 1943 in Ft. Benning, Ga to the late Hoke S. Sewell & Betty Louise Tollerson Sewell. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister in law, Mary R. Sewell.
Mary was an avid doll collector and had every type of doll. She also liked being in the outdoors going fishing and camping in her younger years, and loved her garden. Mary was an outgoing and charismatic individual who never met a stranger. At one time she was a Girl Scout Leader for many years at Camp Wilkes. Mary enjoyed sewing and was a seamstress that had great talents for making clothes and dolls many were given as gifts for nieces and nephews.
Mary graduated from High School in a class of 12 in Camp Hill, AL. After graduation she entered the United States Air Force as a Medic. She was in the Air Force for 2 years. In the Air Force is where she met her loving husband and was married at Chapel 3 on Keesler Air Force Base in 1964.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Jim York; children, Christie (Jim) Beaver, and Holly Rodriguez (Steven Chamberlain); grandchildren, James Beaver, Michael (Courtney) Beaver, Joshua (Cassie) Rodriguez, Austin Chamberlain (Audrey), and Jacob (Paige) Johnson; great grandchildren, Violet, J.R., Scott, Abram, Aiden, Joelle, and Graceyn; Chuck (Suzie) Callender, and Jimmy (Inky) Hughes; brother, Jerry Sewell; nieces and nephews, Mike (Amy) Sewell, and Rob (Brandi) Sewell. Mary also leaves behind to cherish her memory a host of friends and extended family.
A Gathering and Visitation will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Riemann Family Funeral Home Gulfport (11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS). Graveside Services will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
Family of Mary would like to give a special “Thank You” to Dr. John McKee, Dr. Samir Tomajian and his nurse Erin, Dr. Nathan Boles, Dr. Malcolm Dean, Dr. Meagan Spear, and to the Memorial Hospital ICU and Cardiac Telemetery Staff for their exceptional and compassionate love and care during this difficult time.
