Mary Betty Hammond Sewall, age 86, of Biloxi passed away, Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in Biloxi.
Mrs. Sewall was born on December 31, 1922, in Kosciusko, MS to Victor and Meta C. Hammond. She graduated from high school in 1941, attended Hunting College, and was secretary of Boots and Sadle Club. Mrs. Sewall graduated from Ole Miss in the summer of 1944 with a BA degree. She was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority and Pix Intersorority. She worked as a Hostess on the GM&O Train and married 2nd Lt. Frank M. Sewall in 1945.
After returning from the Phillippines, Mrs. Sewall taught school in Amory, MS and moved to Ocean Springs, in 1962 where she continued to teach in the Ocean Springs school system. She was a member of Samual Hammond DAR Chapter in Kosciusko, the Biloxi Chapter of DAR, Colonial Dames Chapter of Biloxi, and As You Like It in Gulf Hills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank M. Sewall; her parents, Victor and Meta C. Hammond; a brother, Billy Hammond, and a sister, Victoria Holford.
She is survived by her children, Frankie Rye of Winfield, AL, Vickie Johnson of Biloxi, and Harry B. Sewall of Ocean Springs; four grandchildren, Karen Rye, Steven Rye, Amanda Johnson, and Mary V. Sewall; and one great grandchild, Austin Rye.
The family would like to thank Paulette Lizana and the Memorial Hospice Staff for the wonderful care they gave our mother.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at 10:00 AM at Kosciusko City Cemetery.
