Mary Helen Schaeffer was born in Louisville, Ky, daughter of J.O. and Helen Matlick. She graduated from Vanderbilt University and obtained a master's degree in philosophy at Tulane University in New Orleans. She enjoyed a lifelong commitment to civic and philanthropic activities including serving as director of Community Services in New Orleans for two terms under Mayor Ernest Morial, working in good government organizations, running local political campaigns, and also enjoying a long stint teaching New Orleans History, Architecture and tour guiding at Delgado College.
In 1988 she moved with her husband to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where she continued to maintain a high level of organizational activity, serving as president of the State Medical Alliance, and board member of the Ms. Heritage Trust and Ohr Museum, and serving in many capacities in the P.C. Historical Society and countless other organizations.
She is survived by her husband Dr. Philip Schaeffer, brother Dayton Matlick, nephew Greg Matlick, and stepson Jonathan Schaeffer.
Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 from 10:00am - 11:00am at Trinity Episcopal Church, Pass Christian, where the funeral service will be held at 11:00am in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery.
