Mary Lane Galloway McGhee, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend died at her home March 9, 2007.
Mary Lane was born on May 10, 1923. She was the daughter of Russell Benjamin and Ella Baker Galloway. Both Mary Lane and her brother Russell Baker were born in the family residence at 16th Street in Mississippi City.
Mary Lane graduated from Gulfport High School in 1940 and Mississippi University for Women in 1944. She then moved to Baton Rouge, La. and worked at Standard Oil Lab (ESSO). She met her husband Robert Edwin (Bob) while in Baton Rouge and they returned to Gulfport to reside and were married on May 1, 1948.
Mary Lane or aÌâÅMamaaÌâ McGhee, as she was affectionately referred to by the friends of her two children, always welcomed friends and neighbors into her home where they felt as if they were home.
Mary Lane was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Gulfport where she has remained an active member. She served as a Sunday school teacher, Methodist Youth Leader and a WSCS (WomenaÌââ¢s Society of Christian Service) officer. She also was a Girl Scout, Brownie Scout and Cub Scout den leader, active in the PTA and Twentieth Century Club. She served on numerous boards and foundations and was active in many volunteer organizations. She was a member of the Gulfport Garden Club and the aÌâÅ40aÌââ¢s GroupaÌâ.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Bob; sister in law, Wilma McGhee of Gulfport; daughter, Anne McGhee Curry and son in law, Robert William Curry (Robbie) of Washington, D.C.; son, William Galloway McGhee(Bill) of Gulfport; three grandchildren, Joseph William McGhee of Baton Rouge, Robert Michael McGhee of Gulfport and Ashley Deanne McGhee of Gulfport.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at Trinity United Methodist Church in the church sanctuary at 1:30 p.m. A coffee fellowship will be held in the Christian Life Center where friends may visit with the family from 12:00 Noon until service time.
A private interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport.
