Mary Myrick Batchelor, age 92, of Gulfport, died on January 29, 2008, in Gulfport.
Mary was born on January 25, 1916, in Laurel, MS, to James William (J.W.) Myrick and Audie Ford Myrick.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Bertrand Batchelor, a past manager of Sears Roebuck; and a grandson, Emerson 'Pepper' Newton Harris, Jr.
Mary is survived by her children, Barbara B. Harris of Metarie, LA, James B. Batchelor, Sr and his wife, Linda Hoff Batchelor, of Gulfport, and Ralph E. Batchelor and his wife, Katherine Plessy Batchelor, of Mineola, TX; grandchildren Ashley Harris Williams and her husband, Charles Seyburn 'Burney' Williams, of Covington, LA; Brett Batchelor and Kimberly Swofford Harris both of Austin, TX; Jade and Nancy Batchelor of Melbourne, FL, Jason and Deborah Tims Batchelor and Justin Batchelor of DeLisle, MS; James, Joshua, Jordan, and Jamie Beth Batchelor of Mandeville, LA; great-grandchildren Frank and Brett Ashley Williams of Covington, LA; Emerson, Christopher, and Brett Harris, Jr., of Kenner, LA; and one nephew, Claud M. 'Tony' Adams.
Mrs. Batchelor lived in the Panama Canal Zone as a child, but finished high school at Pensacola High School in 1933. She attended Florida State Collge for Women until 1936. Mary moved to Gulfport in 1953 where she became active in numerous organizations, serving as President of the Y.M.C.A. and Secretary of the Girl Scouts, UMC and the Long Beach Garden Club. She was a long time member of the Gulfport Yacht Club. She actively supported several Coast churches and has been a member of First United Methodist Church of Gulfport for over twenty years. Before Katrina, she was active in Cursillo, where she enjoyed a large Christian community.
Mrs. Batchelor and her husband, Ralph, had been part owners of Holiday Inns in Alabama and Florida. After his retirement, they traveled all over the world until his death in 1992.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 3:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church, Gulfport, where friends may call from noon until service time. Burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens.
