Marvin Robert Green, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 11, 2021.
He now joins his loved ones who preceded him -his beloved wife of 68 years, Lou Lowery "Sammy" Green, his parents, Marvin Robert Green, Sr. and Bessie Chatham Green Blackwell, his sister Mildred Faye Green Arnold, brother Marion W. Green, and son-in-law James Leslie Lee.
Marvin was born on July 12, 1929 in Hattiesburg, MS and has resided in Gulfport since 1964. He was a graduate of FCHS Brooklyn, MS and Mobile State Vocational Trade School (electronic tech). He attended Spring Hill College and the University of Houston. He was a USAF veteran - 7 years serving overseas in North Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Iwo Jima. He owned and operated Green's Radio & TV repair in Mobile, AL. He was also employed at Mobile Air Material Area at Brookley Air Force Base as a material and equipment inspection foreman and Quality Control Analyst. He served on temporary duty as a federal employee and worked with the Peruvian Air Force to establish a supply/maintenance program for F-86 aircraft. In 1963 he transferred from the USAF to NASA and worked as a Quality Control Engineer in the destructive/non-destructive testing of space hardware at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, LA.
Mr. Green was selected by NASA headquarters to work with the audit team that investigated the 1967 Apollo Capsule fire that resulted in the tragic death of three astronauts.
Mr. Green retired from NASA with 37 years of government service. After retirement from NASA, he was employed by Martin-Marietta Aerospace as a senior construction engineer during the transition phase between the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. Following completion of this transition phase, he was employed by Prudential Insurance Company in Biloxi, MS as a district agent and registered securities representative. He was also a member of the Southwest Leaders Club. For 57 years, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Lyman, where he served as a deacon as well as on various committees, including chairman of building & rebuilding committees, after Hurricanes Camille and Katrina. He also served as an adult Sunday School teacher for 60 years.
Survivors include two daughters Alice (John) O'Neal, Marsha (Jim) King, and one son Mark Stafford Green; Grandchildren- Jennifer (Andy) Ratcliffe, Alison (Rod) McMinn, John Russell (Courtney) O'Neal, Tyler Lee, Zachary Green, and Elizabeth Lee; Great-Grandchildren - Andrew, Anna Kate, and Abigail Ratcliffe, and Joe, Lexi, and Shannon McMinn, and John Preston O'Neal.
