Martha Elizabeth Fitzgerald Whichard

Martha E. Whichard, a one-of-a-kind Speech Therapist best known for her love of children and her abillity to help them fulfill their educational needs, succumbed to cancer on February 10, 2009, in her home on Silver Run Lakes, near Perkinston, MS. Her husband of 41 years, Sam, was at her side. She was 61.
Mrs. Whichard was born in Pennsylvania. Her late father, James Lynn FitzGerald, was a physician and her mother, Mary, is a retired nurse. Martha is also survived by two sisters, Mary O'Donnell of Princeton, New Jersey; and Susan Gardner of Allentown, Pennsylvania; and five nieces and nephews.
One of her finest skills, friends like to say, was her understanding of the needs of special education students. A tireless educator, she jointly worked with them and their teachers crafting many successes. She provided a contagious joy, excitement, and optimism to her job.
Martha graduated in 1969 from St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans with a degree in Speech Therapy.
Besides being an expert at Solitaire and cross word puzzles, she was an avid caretaker of three Scottish terriers and a yellow dog, Pumpkin Marie.
Martha was grateful to the many health care professionals who helped her to fight her illness. She was also grateful to her past mentors who reinforced her relenting desire to assist her students.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Silver Run Lakes Community Pavilion on February 21, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. The Pavilion is next to #214 Old Highway 26 (near the intersection of Perkinston Silver Run Road and Old Highway 26).
Martha asked that donations be made in her memory to the ASPCA or to the American Cancer Society, and to please thank a teacher.
