Dr. Marlin L. Gendron, age 45, of Pass Christian, passed away on January 3, 2011, in Pass Christian.
Dr. Gendron was a computer scientist with the Naval Research Laboratory for over 15 years. He specialized in signal and image processing, including compression techniques, clustering, image enhancement, and image manipulation. He was instrumental in developing one of the first map and mission planning systems for the F/A-18 Hornet and AV-8B Harrier fighter jets and a stand-alone moving-map in support of amphibious assault vehicles for the Marine Corps and Navy.
Dr. Gendron was considered by his peers to be a leading innovator in acoustic imagery change detection. His patent-pending Automated Change Detection and Classification (ACDC) system stands as a monument to his expertise in automation, artificial intelligence, and computer science.
Dr. Gendron received his A.A.S in Electronics from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 1986, a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992, a M.S. in Applied Physics from the University of New Orleans in 1999, and his PhD in Engineering and Applied Science from University of New Orleans in 2004. He was a member of the American Radio Relay League (Call Sign: KD5IVK) and the Harrison County Emergency Operations Network.
Dr. Gendron was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Patsy Gendron.
He is survived by his son, Blake James Gendron of Long Beach; siblings, Kathy Gendron of Ocean Springs, Robbie Gendron and his wife, Anita, of Hurley, Laura McNeil and her husband, David, of Raleigh, MS; and his nieces and nephews, Meagan Gendron, Chase Gendron, Tiffany Gendron, Dylan Cuevas, and Katelyn Cuevas.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 7, 2011, at 6:00 PM at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport. Visitation will be held from 4:30 PM until the service at 6:00 PM.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of South MS, 2615 25th Ave, Gulfport, MS 39501.
