Marie Wheeler, age 78 and a resident of Gulfport, died December 27, 2008, in Gulfport.
Mrs. Wheeler was born in Brewton, AL, to the late Lewis and Henrietta Pugh. She moved to Mobile, AL, where she met her future husband, and moved to the Coast in 1963. Mrs. Wheeler was a former employee of the Peyton-Turner Insurance Agency, and was a member of Michael Memorial Baptist Church in Gulfport where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed gardening and bowled in her younger days. She was a wonderful woman who dearly loved her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wheeler was preceded in death by three brothers, Leon, Curtis, and J. D. Pugh. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Frank Wheeler, of Gulfport; four daughters, Frankie Guthrie, of Jacksonville, FL; Gwen Wheeler, of McHenry; Lorri Herring (Eddie), of Perkinston; and Kim Johnson (Mitch), of Gulfport; a sister, Clarice Southwell; three brothers, Robert Pugh, L. C. Pugh, and Verlon Pugh, all of Brewton, AL; six grandchildren, Brent Cowart, Shea Cowart, Jennifer Sullivan, Jessica Whittington, Keegan Thompson, and Samantha Johnson; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
Visitation will be at Michael Memorial Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, from 12:00 noon until the service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in Finley Cemetery in Harrison County. Family and friends will gather at the church after the services.
