Maria Magdalena Deegen, 84, passed away in Gulfport, Mississippi on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.
A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend to everyone privileged to know her, she will be sadly missed by all. Born Maria Dyrda in Ratibor, Germany on October 10, 1926, she survived the firebombing of Dresden and the Russian invasion and occupation of World War II, finally immigrating to the United States with her husband of 63 years, Friedrich and their son Uwe in 1952. The family would make its new home in Biloxi where Mia worked as a hostess in local restaurants including the Sun 'n Sand, Popp's Ferry, William Talley House and later at the fine jewelry department of Gayfers. Following her retirement, she became a full-time homemaker and enjoyed gardening, crafts, collecting antiques and playing with her beloved Schnauzers, Pixie and Putzie. She faced her final health challenges as she had all of the many trials she endured: with a stoic nature and characteristic stubbornness.
Preceded in death by her parents, Josef and Magdalena Dyrda, and a brother, Hans Dyrda, she is survived by her husband; three sisters, Magda Thomas of Munich, Germany, Edeltraut Schuetze of Hamburg, Germany and Hedel Sossna of Cologne, Germany; a brother, Guenther Dyrda of Erding, Germany; two sons, Dr. Frederick Deegen (Lynn) of Long Beach and Peter Deegen (Monika) of New Berlin, Wisconsin; and five grandchildren, Jennifer Deegen of Long Beach, Fritz Deegen of Biloxi, and Johannes, Moritz and Laura Deegen of New Berlin, Wisconsin.
Maria requested no formal funeral, preferring a quiet and private passage to her heavenly home.
