Margaret M. Shaw, age 101, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in Gulfport. She was the daughter of George Morton MacDonough and Sara Davis Keeler.
Margaret grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where she began teaching piano as a teenager. She taught her last piano lesson a little over eighty years later shortly before her 100th birthday.
Before coming to the Mississippi Gulf Coast she earned her Bachelor's degree from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, was a teacher in the Burlington, Vermont area and later taught at Limestone College in Gaffney, South Carolina. She also had joined the Navy during WWII and served as a communications specialist stationed in Seattle, Washington with a rank of Lt. Commander. After the war was over, she received her Master's degree from the Columbia Teachers College in New York, where she studied piano with Edwin Hughes.
She came to the Mississippi Coast in 1948 to teach music at Gulf Park College. While teaching at Gulf Park she met Hobart Doane Shaw Jr., whom she married in 1952. During her musical career, she offered private lessons in her home in Bayou View, performed as the first soloist for the Gulf Coast Symphony, played organ at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Taught piano classes at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College - Jefferson Davis Campus, and was a founding member of the Gulf Coast Piano Teachers Association. Over the years, she touched the musical lives of hundreds of local piano students.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Hobart Doane Shaw Jr. and her sister, Sara Kathleen MacDonough Walta. She is survived by her two sons, George Hobart Shaw of Pearlington and David Alan Shaw of Gulfport, and her brother Edward Paul MacDonough of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 22, 2014, from 1 - 2 pm at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., Gulfport. A funeral service will be at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
