Margaret Lela Hartley, passed away after a 10 year struggle with breast cancer. LeLa lost her brave and courageously fought battle on June 30, 2012. LeLa was a member of the Baptist faith.
LeLa earned her accounting degree from USM. She was formerly employed with South Central Bell for 8 years. She worked for the Gulfport Veterans Administration Hospital, and later transferred to the Armed Forces Retirement Home. She worked there until Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Retirement Home and she had to take early retirement. After Hurricane Katrina, LeLa worked for FEMA for 2 years.
LeLa loved to garden and spend time in her yard tending to all of her beautiful flowers. She was a shop-a-holic, and her closets full of shoes can attest to that fact. She was a strong supporter of education. LeLa was proud to be a Mississippi native and loved the MS Gulf Coast heritage.
LeLa was preceded in death by her grandparents, Clara Mae and Hosa Rish; her mother, Alene Hartley Goff and husband Cliff; her cousin, Jay Couch; and her life partner, William Sadler, Jr.
She is survived by her adopted father, Clyde Hartley of Gulfport; her brother, John and his wife Elizabeth of Nevada; her uncle, Charles Couch of Sontag, MS; her cousins, Mike Couch of Brooklyn, NY, Laurie Allen (Everette) and family of Gulfport, Carl Couch (Annita) of Charleston, SC, and Martha Nesbit (Steven) of Gautier. She is also survived by her extended family, Kassi and Randy Price of Gulfport and their children, Jillian, Jackson, Carmen and Reese; her close friends and caregivers, Jane Achee, Phyllis Beard, Betty Hart, Bonnie Riggs, and Rita Sadler; and her pets, Big Boy and Kitten.
LeLa chose to be cremated, and not have any services. She requested memorial donations be made to the Pink Heart Fund, P.O. Box 1047 - Long Beach, MS 39560 or the Gulf Coast Aids Task Force, PO Box 8009, Biloxi, MS 39535.
