Lynne Meredith Lighter Hoke, age 69, of Diamondhead, passed away on January 3, 2015 in Gulfport.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Anthony Lighter, Jr and Jessica Fryou Lighter; a brother, Bernard Edward Lighter; and her beloved pets, Tyger, Max, Leo, and several other beloveds throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Thad Collson Hoke of Diamondhead; her children, Meredith Anne Hoke King of Gulfport and Amy Kimberly Hoke Jones of Sugarland, TX; two grandchildren, Matthew Anthony King and William Gregor Jones; and a brother, William Anthony Lighter, III of Clearwater, FL.
She was a student in the first class of Christ Episcopal Elementary School and a graduate of St. Martin's High School in New Orleans. She attended Louisiana State University and received her BS degree and Teaching Certificate at the University of Southern Mississippi.
She served as a student teacher at Long Beach High School and taught French, Spanish, and English at Sacred Heart Academy and Notre Dame High School in Biloxi, St. John High School in Gulfport, and St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis. While at St. Stanislaus, she was the Sponsor of the Quiz Bowl that was featured on WYES.
She was a dedicated, avid animal advocate and a member of the Doris Day Animal League, The Humane Society of the U.S., ASPCA, National Wildlife Federation, the National Audubon Society, and Sierra Club of Mississippi.
She was a past member of Christ Church Cathedral in New Orleans and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Pass Christian.
The family prefers memorials to any charity of choice that benefits animals.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 1:00 PM at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Gulfport with a visitation from Noon until the service.
