Gulfport

Luther Gary Fayard, Sr., a dedicated family man, veteran, and valued member of his community, passed away peacefully in Gulfport, MS on Thursday, January 18, 2024. He was born on August 18, 1945, in Biloxi, MS.

Luther's life was defined by his unwavering commitment to those he loved and his dedication to service. After graduating from Biloxi High School, the Class of 1963, Luther went on to attend Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Soon after, he bravely served his country as a power plant operator in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Luther's time in the military earned him numerous accolades, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Luther embarked on a successful career that spanned three decades. He worked at Melvin's Supply in Biloxi with his father- in- law Doug, for a brief period before finding his true calling at Mississippi Power Company. For 30 years, Luther dedicated himself to Plant Jack Watson in Gulfport, MS before retiring.

While Luther found fulfillment through his professional endeavors, it was his devotion to his family that brought him the greatest joy.  He is survived by his son, and devoted caregiver, Luther Gary (Stephanie) Fayard Jr. of Diamondhead; his daughter, Janet Allison Fayard of D’Iberville; his grandchildren Trace Malone Fayard of Portland, OR; Madelyn McCall Fayard of St. Petersburg, FL; Melissa and Tora Bourgeois, Addison Burton, and Alex Ball all of Mississippi; great-grandchildren Hunter and Rhett.  Several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, as well as his special cousin and best friend Raymond Carroll.

He shared countless wonderful moments with his beloved wife Sharon Louise Fayard, who preceded him in death.  He is also preceded by his son John Douglas Fayard; grandchildren Collin McClain Fayard and Dylan Corey; his parents Howard Benton Fayard and Verna Effie Carroll Fayard Peterson, and a sister Millie Brewer, and his in-laws Doug and Louise Stevenson.

Outside of work and family life, Luther pursued his passions with zest. He was an active member of Handsboro Baptist Church where he lent his voice to the church choir. Additionally, Luther had green thumbs and found solace while tending to his beloved garden. Fishing provided him with both relaxation and excitement.

Luther was also deeply involved in several organizations that held great significance to him. He was proud of being a member of the Masonic Lodge and JOPPA Shriners as they allowed him to forge lifelong friendships and contribute to various charitable causes.

Luther's legacy of love, dedication, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he rest in peace knowing that his remarkable life made a profound impact on those around him.
