Luther Cameron

June 16, 1929 — July 11, 2020

Gulfport

Jack Cameron was born on June 16, 1929 in Baxterville, MS. He died at the age of 91 on July 11, 2020, at the US Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, MS.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Magdalenski Cameron of Gulfport, one son, Jack J. Cameron of Haydenville, MA, and numerous generations of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Luther Cameron, Sr., his mother, Bertha Nobles Cameron, his infant brother, Lamar Cameron, his brother, Herschel Leland Cameron and wife Estelle Johnson Cameron, and sister, Vonnie Lou Ward and husband Haskel “Hack Ward.

Jack was an avid fan of Lumberton football as an alumni and former member of the panther football and baseball teams. He also went on to play football for two years at Pearl River Junior College. After PRJC, Jack joined the United States Air Force in 1947 and spent 22 years in the service. He served one tour of duty in the Korean Conflict and three tours of duty in the Vietnam War. He retired from active military duty in 1969 as an E-9 Senior Master Sargent working in Air Traffic Control.

After retiring from the USAF, Jack accepted a position at the Naval Air Station in Meridian, MS with the FAA overseeing Air Traffic Control. He worked in this capacity for several years before retiring once again and accepting a teaching position in the Air Traffic Control School at the University of Oklahoma. His post military career spanned from 1969-1992, for a combined 45 year career in Air Traffic Control.

His final retirement led Jack and Shirley back to the Magnolia State and to Diamondhead, MS, where he enjoyed mornings on the golf course, evenings at the casinos and race tracks, Biloxi Shuckers Baseball, Lumberton Panther Football, and watching the Boston Red Sox on TV.

He was old school tough, but a loving and caring man that was proud of his family and heritage. He will be missed for his wit, insight, advice, and always unique way of honestly telling you exactly what he thought. The world was better because of Uncle Jack.

A memorial service will be held in his honor for the family and friends at a later date to be determined.
