Lorraine B. Schmidt

June 14, 1922 — September 7, 2012

Lorraine B. Schmidt passed away Friday, September 7, 2012 at the age of 90. Lorraine was born June 14, 1922 in South Dakota, raised in Texas, and had resided in Gulfport, Mississippi for over 65 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Norma Beggs; her three brothers, Richard, Robert, and Roger; a sister, Betty Jean Freeman; and first husband, Mack Byrd.
She is survived by her husband, Jerome F. Schmidt; daughters, Betty Byrd Hart and Randi Lynn Byrd; step daughter, Debbie Waggener (Perry); step son, David Schmidt; granddaughter, Tiffany Hickman Woods (Chris); her precious great grandchildren; Sydne Lauren Hickman and Jaden Elyse Hickman; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Lorraine attended Kilgore Community College in Kilgore, Texas on a band scholarship before serving as a World War II veteran as a Navy WAVES. She retired after 30 years at the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion Center as a Procurement Clerk in the Supply Department. Following her retirement she volunteered for many years for various organizations including Keesler Medical Center Volunteers, Lynn Meadows Discovery Center, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and Bayou View Elementary. Lorraine was an avid sports fan, especially following the Atlanta Braves and New Orleans Saints, and she was a master at solving crossword puzzles. She was of the Methodist faith and supported the Dr. (Pastor) Charles Stanley and his In Touch Ministries in Atlanta, GA.
Our ""Gigi"" will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her. She will live on in our hearts.
A graveside service will be held Monday, September 10, 2012 at 9:00 am at Biloxi National Cemetery.
Following the service, family and friends can gather at GiGi's home for a Celebration of Life.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to the American Heart Association or the Humane Society of South Mississippi.
