Linda H. Matheny, age 65, beloved wife, mother, and sister, passed away on
September 24, 2008, at her home in Long Beach after a long battle with cancer.
Linda was born in Fayetteville, NC, and grew up in and around Sanford, NC. Linda attended Campbell University in Buie's Creek, NC, and received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education and school administration from Mississipi University for Women in Columbus, MS. She also held a Certificate of Gifted Education from Delta State University. She had lived in Long Beach since 1984.
Linda was a teacher of gifted children and was a gifted teacher herself. She taught in Plantersville, MS, Waveland, MS, and retired in 2003 after 18 years as gifted class teacher at Long Beach Middle School. She was loved and respected by her students and fellow teachers alike for her creativity, her sparkling sense of humor, and her wonderful story-telling ability. After retirement, she was a volunteer reader at St. Thomas Elementary School. She loved decorating, shopping, and was an avid collector of antiques. Linda was a life-long Baptist and member of Lemon Springs Baptist Church, Lemon Springs, NC, and attended First United Methodist Church in Gulfport.
Linda was preceded in death by her infant son, Matthew William Matheny; by her parents, Bailey and Madeline Hall; and by her father-in-law, W. T. Matheny.
She is survived by her husband, William T. Matheny, Jr., of Long Beach; her daughter, Aimee Matheny, of Denver, CO; her brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Pamela Hall, of Summerfield, NC; her stepmother-in-law, Ann Matheny, of Baton Rouge, LA; her nephew, Clay Hall and his wife, Ashley, of Charlotte, NC; her niece, Diedre Hall, of Winston-Salem, NC; her aunt, Josephine (John) Richardson, of West End, NC; her uncle, Eugene Rackley, of Sanford, NC; and numerous beloved cousins.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Davidson and his staff at the Medical Oncology Group, and to Brenda Dubuisson as well as all the nurses and staff of Memorial Hospital Hospice. Donations in Linda's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Memorial Hospice.
The visitation will be held on Friday, September 26, 2008 from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Rd, Long Beach. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church, 2301 15th Street, Gulfport, where friends may call from 10:00 AM until service time.
