Lillian Lucille Maxwell, age 91, of Biloxi, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011 in Gulfport.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Maxwell; brothers and sisters: Louis J. Wehmeyer of Corpus Christi, Texas; Robert E. Wehmeyer of Mathis, Texas; Grace Harris of Killeen, Texas; and Margie Saling of Corpus Christi, Texas.
She is survived by her son, Robert Michael Maxwell (Colonel, USAF ret) and his wife Priscilla Ann Maxwell of Fairfax, Virginia; her daughter, Margaret Grace Parker of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; grandchildren, Hillary Ann Maxwell of Arlington, Virginia, Christin Grace Maurer of St Louis, Missouri, Adam Thomas Parker of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Alex Michael Parker of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and her great-granddaughter, Presley Ann Maurer of St Louis, Missouri.
Mrs. Maxwell was born on August 4, 1919 as the fourth of five children to Louis Frederick Wehmeyer and Eula Maude (Ulbrich) Wehmeyer in Port Lavaca, Texas. After the untimely passing of her father, the family moved to San Marcos, Texas, where she grew up. She graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos and taught high school in Dickinson, Texas for a short period of time before returning to San Marcos to attend graduate school. She completed her Master of Arts degree from Southwest State in 1942. She moved to St Louis, Missouri in 1942 and married Charles Robert Maxwell of Watertown, Connecticut in May of 1947. During her time in St Louis, she did part-time teaching at Washington University and at the Belleville, Illinois Township High School.
She was a pioneer woman in Air Force electronics training. She began her civil service career in 1942 at Scott AFB, Illinois, as a radio instructor with the Army Air Corps. After a two-year break, she transferred with the radio school to Keesler AFB in 1949 for a ten-year period before moving to Lackland AFB, Texas. Returning to Keesler to stay in 1962, she held a succession of supervisory and managerial positions in communications and electronics training development. In 1988 she was named Air Training Command's Civilian Training Manager of the Year. At her retirement from Civil Service in August of 1990, she was one of the most senior ranking female civil servants on Keesler, culminating over 43 years of federal service.
After her retirement, she remained active traveling to places such as Panama and Costa Rica, visiting family and her grandchildren in Virginia and Louisiana. She stayed active in the Armed Forces Communication-Electronics Association. She was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa educational fraternity and was an officer of the local Chapter. She was a member of the Metropolitan Dinner Club. She was also a long-time member of the Leggett Memorial Methodist Church in Biloxi.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 11:00 am, with visitation one hour prior, at Leggett Memorial United Methodist, 1410 Beach Boulevard Biloxi, MS 39530.
Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Gulfport.
