Lela Darlene Alvarez, a youthful 50, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008, losing her courageous battle with cancer. """"Darlene"""" was a resident of Gulfport, MS and known to many for her inner and outer beauty, and her caring nature. Her dedication and selflessness have been exhibited through her life being a devoted Christian, mother, grandmother """"Nonners"""", caregiver, mentor, and school bus driver for over 20 years. Her effervescent soul has touched many.
Her accomplishments of being a musician, basketball player, plus-size model, baseball team mom, church youth leader, homemaker, college student, friend and companion molded her to the witty, charming, beautiful woman that touched our lives.
Ms. Alvarez was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Rae Rowell. Survivors include her father, Ernest Cowart, of Gulfport; her sons: Anthony Claude Bright and his wife Cherie, of Gulfport; Ruben Channell Alvarez, of Biloxi; and Nathan Daniel Alvarez, of Gulfport; 4 sisters; 5 brothers; her grandchildren: Simon Alarez and Olivia Alvarez, both of Biloxi, and her long time friend and companion, Lawrence Riley, of Gulfport.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 12:00 Noon at Olivet Baptist Church, with visitation two hours prior to services. Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Gardens in Gulfport.
