Lawrence """"Larry"""" Woten, age 80 and a resident of Biloxi, died Thursday, October 2, 2008 in Gulfport.
Mr. Woten was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Katherine Woten, and daughter, Marsha Woten.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Helen Woten; his son Mike Woten, both of Biloxi; brothers, Carl Woten and wife Dee of Circleville, OH, Richard Woten and wife Earline of Friendship, OH; sister, Mona Christman and husband Loren of Charlestown, IN; sister-in-law, Alberta Nelson of Portsmouth, OH; and ten nieces and nephews.
Mr. Woten was a graduate of West Portsmouth High School, class of 1946, and Wilmington College. He was signed by the Boston Red Sox and played in their minor league program. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Air Traffic Control instructor, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Larry worked for the City of Gulfport as Assistant Recreation Director for 28 years. He was a college and high school baseball, football, and basketball official for 40 years, the ASA State Umpire in Chief for 15 years, and he umpired the American Legion World Series four times, the ASA National Finals five times, and is in the Oklahoma City Hall of Fame as an umpire.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Allison Wall, the staff of Memorial Hospital 3B, and the staff of Gulf Coast Oncology Group for their special care and support.
Friends are invited to visit from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Monday, October 6, 2008 at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME in Biloxi. The Graveside Service will be at 11:00a.m. on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Biloxi National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Biloxi American Legion Youth Sports, c/o American Legion Post 33, Attn: Youth Baseball, PO Box 193, Biloxi, MS 39533.
