Kenneth Charles """"Slippy"""" Sletten, 83, of Gulfport died Tuesday, January 16, 2007 in Gulfport.
Mr. Sletten was a native of Wabasha, MN and came to Gulfport at a young age to make his home along the coastal waters that he loved. """"Slippy"""" was a Golden Glove Boxing champion while in high school and later served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII. His love for boating and fishing and his experience in the Merchant Marines led him to work with a close friend to put together maps of local waters to chart fishing areas.
""""Slippy"""" was well known in the business community. He owned a sporting goods store for a number of years before entering the insurance profession as the owner of Sletten Insurance. Mr. Sletten was also active in the Gulfport Elks Lodge #978 where he was a life member. He was also active in the Jazz Society and enjoyed attending American Legion Activities. """"Slippy"""" loved outdoor water sports, fishing, hunting, and he loved to dance.
He was preceeded in death by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Margaret Jerymn Sletten, parents, Edward and Josephine Sletten, and a brother, Glenn Sletten.
Survivors include his daughter, Betty Flurry and her husband Tal, granddaughter, Amanda Belew and her husband Brandon, all of Long Beach, grandson, Martin Flurry, Gulfport, great-granddaughter, Bailey Belew, Long Beach, Sisters-in-law and their husbands, Dorris and Butch Prather, Mobile, AL, Kathryn and Bill Hutsenpiller, Waleska, GA, Elizabeth """"Murph"""" and Rodney Fortenberry, Long Beach, and a longtime friend Dorothy Parker, Gulfport, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Friday, January 19, 2007 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Long Beach. Friends may visit from 10 - 11 am.
