On March the 15th, 2010, the world lost an exceptional lady. Katie Eleese Smith, peacefully graduated to be with the rest of her generation. Born the 9th of 11 children, June 17, 1919, to Mr. and Mrs. Percy V. Smith, she grew to adulthood in South Mississippi. After losing her One True Love to a depth charge in WWII, she dedicated the rest of her almost 91 years in the service to others; first her aging parents, her brothers and sisters and all of their children, and then every neighbor, friend and especially any child she thought had a need she could fill. From simple tasks like rolling a neighboraÌââ¢s hair each week for church, running errands for shut-ins, or babysitting, to moving into a home where her special skills were needed to nurse a new mother back to health while caring for her little ones until the mother was ready. And, although she worked full time, there was never a favor asked of this selfless lady which was refused, and more often the favor was performed before the recipient ever thought to ask.
She is survived by eleven nieces and nephews and nearly a hundred great nieces and nephews, along with the many, many more who have also shared in her loving presence.
While we selfishly mourn her loss, we will rally on Friday, March 19, 2010, to celebrate her amazing life, at 11:00 a.m. at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Road in Long Beach, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Coalville Cemetery in Woolmarket.
