Kathleen Smith McCall died Friday, January 1, 2010, in the Tulane Abdominal Transplant Unit in New Orleans. A lifelong resident of Gulfport, Kathy was born January 25, 1950, one month after JesusaÌâ⢠birthday, to the late Sidney and Kate Smith.
A former college English instructor with a graduate degree in Creative Writing, Kathy retired in 2001. She had always enjoyed jewelry and after a single class in beading, began Sundancers, her line of colorful, whimsical jewelry.
Kathy found joy in many things: birthday celebrationsaÌâ""her own and those of her friendsaÌâ""reading and writing poetry; bargain hunting; sailing; beautiful note cards and handwritten notes; the English language and its quirks; antiques; color, especially pink.
Kathy cherished her family and friends. She never met a stranger, and it was rare to leave her company without having laughed aloud.
She was a member of the Gulfport Fine Arts Club and a co-founder of the Gulfport Galleria of Fine Art. She worshiped at The Nourishing Place and was a long-time member of the ecumenical Lilies Bible Study Group.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis, whom she called her rock during her illness; her brother, Sidney Lamar Smith (Jeepsie); two nephews, Sidney Lamar Smith III (Jenni) and Austin Fentress Ray Smith; a niece, Lyle Smith Morgan (Matt); a great-nephew, Fentress Morgan; and an uncle, Lavon Smith (Betty).
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 on Wednesday, January 6, at First United Methodist Church in Gulfport. Friends may visit one hour prior to services.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations to the Humane Society of South Mississippi, 2615 25th Ave., Gulfport, MS 39501.
