Karl Christian Paul Muller, age 87 and a resident of Gulfport, died on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, in Gulfport. Mr. Muller was born in Roseland, LA and had been a resident of Gulfport since 1992.
He received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA.
He proudly served his country as a commissioned officer in the Navy during World War II, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1944. After that assignment, Karl transported a ship to Majuro in the Atoll Islands with the 7th Fleet under Admiral Nimitz. The IX-135 U.S.S. Arethusa was one of three ships the Navy had taken over from the Merchant Marines to use as aÌâÅfilling stationsaÌâ for the destroyer fleet. As engineering officer, he was ahead of the fleet through the Admiralty Islands, Philippine Islands (Leyte Gulf) and Okinawa.
After the war, he began his career at Louisiana Power & Light where he served as a cadet working diligently up to designing, engineering, constructing and operating fossil power plants. After serving as Superintendent at Nine Mile Point he was sent to Little Gypsy Steam Electric Station. There he also served as Superintendent of the first complex power unit in the world. During his long and distinguished career, Mr. Muller completed numerous nuclear courses from both Louisiana Tech University and Louisiana State University. He also obtained the certification of a Registered Professional Engineer. He retired from Louisiana Power & Light after 39 years of faithful service in 1986.
He was an active member of MS City United Methodist Church in Gulfport. Karl had been president of the United Methodist MenaÌââ¢s Club, a trustee, a member of the church senior group, an usher, and volunteered at the Seaman Center.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Annie Atkins Muller, his parents Carl Christian Muller and Sarah Smith Muller, and a sister Matilda Steen.
He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Marianne (Mickey) Muller; a sister, Elsa Mack, Mandeville, LA; 5 children, Mary Ann (John) Plauche, Ponchatoula, LA, Carl (Amy) Muller, Jr., Diamondhead, Millicent Muller, La Place, LA, John (Cheri) Muller, Eagle River, AK, Donna (Joseph) Montenegro, New Orleans, LA and 2 step children, Ken (Terry) Northington, Gulfport, and Ann (Butch) Wallace, Long Beach; 9 grandchildren, Jennifer Liffmann, David Plauche, Laura Beth Muller, Sarah Muller, Jacob Muller, Erin Moore, Zachary Northington, Austin Wallace, and Matthew Wallace; 4 great grandchildren, Olivia Liffmann, Tyler Breeland, Faith Breeland, and Ean Breeland.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care and support from the staff of Gulfport Memorial Hospice, MS City United Methodist Church, and the many close friends and relatives.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2008, at MS City United Methodist Church, 219 Courthouse Rd, Gulfport, where friends may visit 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. at St. John Memorial Gardens, 2055 W. Airline Highway, LaPlace, LA 70068.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to MS City United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall Fund, 219 Courthouse Rd., Gulfport, MS 39507.
