Juanita "Nita" Cuevas Chapman, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away on October 26, 2023, in Gulfport, MS. She was born on June 26, 1941, in Necaise Crossing, Hancock County, MS. Nita led a remarkable life full of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Nita devoted a significant portion of her life to serving others through her career at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, MS. Her commitment to helping those who served our country was truly commendable. Nita's dedication and compassion touched the lives of many veterans under her care.
When not at work, Nita enjoyed spending time pursuing her hobbies and interests. She had an unwavering passion for watching football and basketball games. Whether cheering on her favorite teams or engaging in lively discussions with fellow fans about game strategies and player performances, Nita's enthusiasm for sports knew no bounds. Additionally, she loved playing bingo and testing her luck at the Casino's slots—a pastime that brought her endless joy and excitement.
Nita will be remembered for her warmheartedness and contagious laughter that brightened any room she entered. Her kind nature touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Nita's unconditional love for her family knew no bounds; they were the center of her universe. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever be etched in their hearts.
She is survived by her loving son Rickey Chapman (Sandra), sister Helen Curry (Charlie), grandchildren Crystal Matta (Joseph) and Shelby Wyrick (Hunter), as well as great-grandchildren Brennan and Tatum Matta and Riley and Blakelyn Wyrick.
Nita was predeceased by her daughter Grace Mae Cuevas, sister Veda Mae Cuevas, brothers John Cuevas, Buck Cuevas, James "Blue" Cuevas, and Michael "Mack" Cuevas, and great-grandchild Myles Harper Matta. Their memories will be forever treasured, and their imprint on Nita's life will never fade.
To honor Nita's memory, her family invites you to join them in celebrating her life. Visitation will be held on October 30, 2023, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church located at 9062 Kiln Delisle Rd in Pass Christian, MS. This will be followed by a Mass at the same location from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM. Nita will then find eternal rest at St. Joseph Cemetery at Rotten Bayou in Diamondhead, MS, with the interment ceremony taking place from 1:00 PM to 1:15 PM.
Nita lived her life with unwavering faith and an open heart—a beacon of light for all who knew her. As we say our goodbyes, let us remember the laughter she brought into our lives, the kindness she extended to others without hesitation, and the love that will continue to guide us in her absence. Nita may no longer be physically with us, but her spirit will forever shine brightly within our hearts.
