Joey Castiglia passed away peacefully on February 20, 2022. Born to the late Joseph and Merlyn Castiglia in 1956, Joey lived in Long Beach for most of his life. He had a close circle of friends and those who knew him will long remember the uniqueness of his character.
Joey attended St. John High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in History at the University of Southern Mississippi. His work life was characterized by its diversity, yet Joey earned a living doing exactly what he enjoyed. He was proud to serve in the US Army in the 5th Infantry Division and then the National Guard. He worked on a gas pipeline traveling across the country where his adventures turned into some of his greatest stories. His time spent catching crabs provided Joey with both great memories and great friendships. He worked for JLB Construction in the rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.
Joey’s love for history manifested itself in a deep appreciation for reading. He would share wisdom from the great novels of Faulkner, Steinbeck, Hunter Thompson and many others. His retention of detail was quite remarkable. At any time of the year, he could be found intensely watching the sports teams he loved—Braves, Saints, Pelicans, and any USM competition—with family and friends.
Joey lived a simple life. He wasn’t interested in technology, the latest fashions or idle chatter. He chose the path less traveled and indeed made a lasting impression on those who appreciated his individuality. He is deeply missed by his brother Alvin (Laura) Castiglia, his sister Donna Hudson (Butch) and all his friends and family, yet his memory will live on.
Graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on March 19th at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a gathering at his sister’s house on Ray Road after the service.
