John Young

John Harlow Young, 86, passed away on July 7, 2021. John was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina after WWII, where he graduated from high school. After a year at UNC Chapel Hill, he joined the Navy and retired in 1973 after serving 20 years. John retired as a Chief Personnelman having served aboard various ships and stations in Norfolk, San Diego, and Washington, D.C. After that retirement, John continued to serve the Navy as an analyst, division director, and computer programmer at Ellyson and Saufley Fields, with the Navy Enlisted Advancement System. John graduated in 1988 from the University of West Florida with a BS (Cum Laude) in Systems Science. John was a lifetime member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Mayflower Descendants. After his final retirement in 1990, John spent lots of time fishing local inshore waters and traveling to Lake Guntersville several times a year to fish for largemouth bass. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren participating in sports. More recently, John was a resident of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Mississippi.

John was preceded in death by his father and mother, John and Margaret Young, and his first wife, Annette Young. He is survived by his wife, Wanda; his children John Jr. (Susan); Marc (Scooter) and Sandy (Carter) Haynes; and stepdaughter, Kristi. His grandchildren Robin (Bill), Jessica, Kate (Jarrod), Melissa (Matt), Will, and Samantha (Jacob). He is also survived by his great grandchildren Ashley, Hannah, Faith and Aubree.

Interment will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery, with full military honors, following a private ceremony.
