John Russell Werkau, age 75, of the St. Martin Community, passed away Friday, September 13, 2019 at Ocean Springs Hospital.
John served our country for 4 years in the U. S. Navy with 2 of those years aboard the USS Strong. He retired from Ingalls Shipyard after 38 years as a pipefitter. John was an avid fan of Cruising the Coast. He was always busy working on and rebuilding old cars. One of his best enjoyments was creating unique "rides" for the grandkids. He loved his neighbors and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
Thanks to all of the Nurses at Ocean Springs Hospital and Hospice for taking such good care of him. A special thank you to Dr. Pershing, Dr. Smith, Dr. French and Dr. Shelby.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Grace Werkau; his son, Kelly Werkau; his granddaughter, Kayla Danielle Jones; and his grandparents.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Betty Werkau of St. Martin; his daughters, Karlene (Chris) Foret of Biloxi and Rhonda (Terry) Jones of Pace, FL; his sons, Brad Hodges of Spotsylvania, VA, and Randy (Stephanie) Myers of Milton, FL; his sisters, Janet (Sivori) Hunt of Gulfport, and Karen (Robert) Rodgers of Biloxi; his grandchildren, Gabrielle Foret, Zachary Foret, Braden Hodges, Macy Hodges, Zoe Hodges and Hannah Myers; and his nieces, Stephanie Sivori, Christian Kahler and Kevin Kahler.
Friends are invited to join the family for visitation from 11am to 12pm, Wednesday, September 18th at Big Ridge Baptist Church, 3230 Big Ridge Road, D'Iberville, MS. The funeral service will follow at 12pm at the church. Mr. Werkau will be laid to rest at D'Iberville Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
