John R. Watkins

John R. Watkins, son of John and Helen, was born the oldest of two in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 8, 1929, and passed away at the age of 81, on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Keesler Medical Center, Biloxi, MS.
At a young age, John joined the U.S. Army on June 17, 1947, after graduating from Yeadon High School. John was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing and country music. John always had a great sense of humor, even in his final days. He held his head high and didn't complain. He listened to every problem patiently and gave wise counsel.
John distinguished himself both in garrison, peace time and in war by earning various medals to include the highest honor the Service Cross for valor and a bronze star. He was wounded in battle and received the Purple Heart.
John served as a sheriff in the State of Arizona for several years and later worked as a General Building Contractor in the State of California. In 1970, John wed his beloved wife Marla and fathered two children, Daniel and Rebekah.
In 1994, John wed his beloved wife Lydia Gamayao, in Iloilo, Philippines and later settled in Biloxi, MS.
John accepted Christ at an early age and later became a member of Gulf Coast SDA Church.
He is survived by one sister, Marlene Eldredge, of Jupiter, FL. Survivors also include his three children, Daniel Watkins, of San Diego, CA, Rebekah Nguyen, of San Diego, CA, and Sarah Watkins, of Iloilo, Philippines; four grandchildren, Savanah, Chloe, Jake, and Ryan; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Mr. Watkins was buried at the Arlington National Cemetery on Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at 10:00 AM.
