John Peck Washburn, 85, passed away on June 11 after a short illness. He was born in
Chicago in 1926 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific with a Combat Beach Signal Team making 11 major landings including the islands of Okinawa and Tarawa.
He held two engineering degrees and worked for Rockwell/Collins in the aviation field. After retirement, he resided in Carroll Valley, PA, from 1992 to 2006 and served as Sewer & Water Commissioner for the Borough before relocating to Gulfport.
Friends have noted his sense of humor, quick wit and good gentle nature that marked him as a true gentleman. His love of life, travel and books took him all over the world.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Peck and Vera (Spillar) Washburn.
He is survived by his wife, Sara of Gulfport; son Scott, daughter-in-law Maureen and four grandchildren of Bristow, VA.
Sincere thanks to the Memorial Hospital ICU team for their care during his final days and the support and prayers from his extended family and friends.
