John Edward Thornburg Jr., born on October 10, 1962, in Biloxi, MS, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer, on August 11, 2024, in Gulfport, MS.
John was a dedicated employee at the Biloxi VA Medical Center, where he poured heart and soul into his work.
John's love for education was evident as a graduate of Gulfport High School, Class of 1981. He furthered his studies and obtained his associate's degree in Travel and Tourism from Phillips Jr. College, Class of 1983. Education was a cornerstone of his life, shaping him into the knowledgeable and well-rounded individual he was.
Throughout his life, John cultivated a variety of hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. He found solace in the beauty of sunrises and sunsets, many captured through his coastal photography. His passion for reflexology and yoga highlighted his love for holistic well-being. He was an avid fan of LSU Football and Atlanta Braves Baseball, he cheered on his favorite teams with gusto. John was also a cherished member of The Nourishing Place, where he found community and connection.
In the face of adversity, John faced each challenge with unwavering courage and strength. Despite his illness, he fought bravely until the end, embodying resilience and grace. John's peaceful passing marked the end of a life lived fully and with unwavering determination.
John is preceded in death by his parents John and Myrna (nee Allen) Thornburg and a sister Peggy Herring.
He leaves behind his sisters, Elizabeth Thornburg, Mary (Brendan) Gibbons, and Sheila (Tim) Davis, and his niece Analese Gibbons, and his two nephews Kurt Ladner and Michael Hoda, all of whom cherish the memories and moments shared with him.
John's legacy lives on through the love and memories he shared with all who knew him. His kindness, strength, and passion for life will forever echo in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have him touch their lives. May he rest in eternal peace.
The family would like to thank Dr. Olivia Hightower, her staff and the staff of Encompass Rehabilitation and the staff at St. Joseph Hospice for the care and compassion they provided.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at The Nourishing Place, 606 Tennessee Street, Gulfport, from 11:00 AM until the time of services at 12:00 Noon. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to The Nourishing Place or WOW (Women of Wisdom) will be appreciated.
