John Warren Sumrall

John Warren Sumrall, age 92, passed away June 26, 2012. Mr. Sumrall was born on September 21, 1919. He was a mechanic with several businesses throughout his life; but his special interest were the welfare of his family and country.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and he was a member and former past Commander of the American Legion Post 119. He traveled extensively with his wife, Lola, during their time together attending 31 national conventions. While he was with the American Legion, he served as the National Committee Chairman of the Merchant Marines.
Mr. Sumrall was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence P. Sumrall and Viola Tucker Sumerall; his wife, Lola Key Sumrall; step-son, Marvin Paul ""Bobby"" Olson; brothers, Robert ""R.B."" Sumrall, Douglas Sumrall, and Raymond Sumrall; sisters, Betty Blake and Mary Thompkins.
He is survived by his brother, William Leonard Sumrall; his daughter, Jacqueline ""Jackie"" (Fred, Jr.) Sumrall Platts; grandchildren, John (Natalie) Platts, Alicia (David) Platts Vaughn; great grandchildren, Tyler Platts, Devin Platts, John Platts, Jr., Taylor Cox, and Kahlen Vaughn; nieces; nephews; and several extended family members.
The family would like to say a very heartfelt thank you to J.W.'s ""Special Angel"" Mrs. Shelby Townsend for all of her love, support and care during his illness.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, with a visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
