MSgt John Clayton Mercer, U.S.A.F. Retired, 63 years young, left this life on August 29, 2011.
Mr. Mercer was born in Barnsville, OH, to Guy Clayton and Dorothy Hannahs Mercer. He retired from the U.S.A.F. after 22 years of service. He was the recipient of the Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Humanitarian Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, and the Vietnam Service Award (1970). After retiring from the military, Mr. Mercer dedicated much of his time to serving his local community. He worked as the Director of the Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast and was a former Volunteer of the Year for the City of Biloxi. He also received the MS Governor's Distinguished Service Award for outstanding community volunteer efforts in 1987. After these periods of service, Mr. Mercer worked in the casino industry as a dealer and supervisor. He was a member of the Keesler and Sunkist Country Clubs.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and two children, Missy and Danny. He is also survived by four siblings, Debbie Go, Mike Mercer, Amy Ponczak, and Sue Mercer.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, from 8:30 a.m. until service time at 10:00 a.m.
Burial with full military honors will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
