John R. Leonhard, age 91, a native of Wisconsin and a resident of Pass Christian, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2021.
John was a native of Wisconsin. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army. John was in the Korean War where he was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. John was retired from being a truck driver instructor, driving semi-trucks, school bus driver, and being a security guard at Stennis. He was a Past Grand Knight, District Deputy and District Marshal for the Knights of Columbus. John was a Faithful Navigator of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Combat Infantry Association and the Purple Heart Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Paul Leonhard and Ella Leonhard; his son, Michael Leonhard; his brothers, Oliver, Eugene, and Rueben Leonhard; and his sisters, Anna Yanko, Gertrude Oldenburg, Pearl Palmer and Ellen Norgard.
John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elaine Leonhard; his children, Paula (Robert) Smith, Tina (Stephen) Ladner, Michelle Freeman, Amanda (Michael) Carnahan, Angel (Charles) Diaz, Joan (Ron) Gundlach, Steven Leonhard, Russell Leonhard, Dave Leonhard, John (Tammy) Leonhard, Jr.; siblings, Marjorie (Joe) Rodriquez, and Joyce Fulton; 21 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; niece, Mary Rose Long; and daughter in law, Jamie Leonhard.
The family would like to thank the hospice team from Kare-in-Home. A special thanks to his nurse, Angela McCormick, for her dedicated service and care she gave him.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 11am at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Pass Christian with the visitation for family and friends beginning at 9am. Burial will follow in Biloxi National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to make memorial contributions to Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church Building Fund, 9062 Kiln Delisle Rd., Pass Christian, MS 39571.
