Mr. John Edward ""Johnnie"" Holmes, Sr., age 77, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012.
He was born in West Point, MS on April 6, 1935. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He won the honor as a tank commander. He worked as a Market Manager during his career at Sunflower Grocery Store in Long Beach, Jitney Jungle and Delchamps. After retiring from the grocery business, he drove a school bus for twelve years for the Long Beach School District. He volunteered for many years in the Youth Baseball Organization in Long Beach.
Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Mildred Holmes of West Point; two sisters, Peggy Cox and Betty Ann Reed; and his wife, Mary Hart Holmes.
Suvivors include his two sons, John Edward Holmes, Jr. and wife Angie of Long Beach and Robert Scott Holmes of Houston, Texas; his brother, Jimmy Holmes and wife, Mary Jim of West Point; and his grandchildren, Nicole Holmes Taylor and husband Jason of Pembroke Pines, FL, Nicholas Edward Holmes and wife Christine of Gulfport, McKenna Hart Holmes and Jacob Shelton, both of Houston, TX.
Friends are invited to visit the Holmes family from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 2 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Road in Long Beach. The Funeral Service will be at 9:45 a.m., Tuesday, July 3 in the funeral home chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery, where Mr. Holmes will be laid to rest next to his wife.
